Please Stop those Superstitions!

We are living in electronic world where the digital and electronics are dominating. Though man has come off jungle, and started living in cities he still carries many things of the past.

I was just watching a private television of South India last weekend, in which there was news about a superstition being followed in a village called ‘Kudiyirrupu’ near ‘Neyveli’ in Tamilnadu, India. The freak superstition was girls lesser than 10 years old were let by their parents to be beaten by a whip in public by a man, and the girls are dancing in an eccentric way, by letting their hair falling on their faces and dancing like they were mad. This practice has started since few years and according to one of the girl’s mother, every parent is coming forward to let their daughter undergo this cane beating and it is getting popular. The superstition is after this ‘Sacred Ceremony’ the village gets lots of rain, and makes the village fertile.

Few seconds of such clippings, brings so much of anger on people like us. I really pity those beautiful innocent children who fall prey to this. Being a father of a girl of 6 years old, I could only feel ashamed for talking the same language what those brainless people speak.

Will not any good hearted Women’s welfare association stop this kind of ceremonies happening in a state which boasts of bringing the Information technology into their cities.

It is high time if few ‘Manbu migus’ (Ministers) who say that they are working hard to uplift poor people, discourage people doing such foolish acts, by imposing certain strict laws in their assemblies and Parliament.

We are in 21st Century and do not belong to those ‘STONE AGES’.

People just blindly take these superstitions without thinking, nothing in our hand when it comes to nature. Its all rumors spread by the knowledge less people, and people puzzled why should we left alone to suffer and why not join this activates? Recently in the developing Chennai some lit three lamps out side there home, where they hope the Tamil year has come on buffalo that’s not good for the sons of the family. I find those lamps on streets and near garbage bins.

I feel education and awareness doesn’t reached places, has many superstitions.

You are right. It is really a shame to know our guys are still believing these superstions. What a shame? It is very difficult to change the belief.

Ha..ha.. Loga.. yes.. there are few things which make us laugh. Jeevan had mentioned one and it was again laughable. I remember few years before every other lady who was married tied a new manjal kayiru on their neck. Funny.. though..

When will wake up ? When will the country be free ?

I have been in some pain in recent times, looking at all the divisions that are plaguing the country.

In the name of culture this is barbarism of the worst kind. This makes it even worse

It's pretty sad. Though people claim that they really don't care about superstitions and stuff,... I have seen people still worrying about a black cat crossing and stuff. That initiates a negative thinking.. which at times does lead to negative behaviour and hence their day turns out bad and their beleif only becomes stronger

It is really sad that though we profess to be developed, we engage in such things. There was one episode, which they claimed was an annual affair, a couple of months ago, where very small infants were thrown from the top of the gopuram of a temple by the priest of the temple and the children were caught by people standing below. It was reported that except for one kid who sustained bruises, all others escaped being hurt. I was searching for this in the web, but could not find that. It was horrifying to read that indeed. Unless, we come out of such superstitions, I am sure we will still live in the black ages.

Kavi,

I agree with you and keep asking the same question. I am sure that it may not happen during our life.

Balaji S Rajan said...

Neha,

I do agree and it is not only in eastern countries. It is also much prevalent in Western World. Though the percentage may not be to that extent it is also shocking to know that there are people who are still believing those superstitions.

Chandrika,

I am sorry for that. Am I trying to be too negative. Let me avoid such things in the future.

Rama,

It is really shocking to know about that. Oh...god where did it happen and has it stopped. People are getting crazy.

Oh my kadavulae. Enna kodumai idhu.

I have not heard this news but it has kindled my anger big time. These kinds of events should be banned and if parents keep doing this, they have to be given the "Anniyan" treatment. It is a pity that children in these villages have to face all these idiotic superstitions.

Politicians are just useless b's anyways. Given a vote, they would make their children also get beaten.

Sometimes it looks like a curse from god but god himself/herself would be confused right now, knowing that these idiotic parents have started enjoying it.

Some parents buy toys for their children. Some parents are using their children as toys.

I only hope these parents die or superstitions die.
